The Kindness Corps

All author royalties from the sale of Bending the Arc are donated to a wonderful organization in called The Kindness Corps.

As the name implies, this group is all about spreading kindness — in practical ways and for those who need it the most. In the author’s opinion, The Kindness Corps is one of the finest examples of a small grassroots organization truly bending the arc. But perhaps the best way to describe it is through the words of the founder herself, Leathia West:

“Growing up in Washington, DC, and its surrounding area, most people have been raised with regular kitchen table conversations about politics and civil rights in particular - that's just the fabric of the place. Civic engagement is not a far leap for many. However, knowing just how to engage or how to help those in need is another story. Out of this,The Kindness Corps was born.

Its mission is to share as much kindness in as many ways possible to as many people as possible. The group decided kindness is a marvelous thing and spreading that stuff around was just grand! Community service events such as collecting and distributing hundreds of backpacks filled with school supplies, making sure area families have Thanksgiving turkeys, partnering with local agencies to prepare meals for the chronically ill and organizing household goods for the homeless who are preparing to move into their own apartments are just a few examples. Another favorite is giving yearly Christmas elf assistance to a grandmother who suddenly became primary caretaker to her three grandchildren, all under the age of three, because their parents were involved in unfortunate circumstances. There's a new and rewarding service opportunity every month and volunteers choose what to do and when they'd like to participate.”
